- This memoir is in large part an exploration of identity formation and parenthood from the perspective of the narrator as both child and adult moving between Australia and Europe. It uses different narrative modes and a range of structural innovations to portray the rupture between childhood and adulthood and the dislocation engendered both by trauma and multiple migrations. This work intentionally blurs the boundaries between memoir, novel and short story collection in order to explore the shifting nature of our relationship to the past and therefore our own identities. Masculinity is used here as a lens through which the narrator explores his key relationships across time, particularly those with his mother and father and his brothers.
